New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (commonly called the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori language name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica). New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation: it is situated about 2,000 km (1250 miles) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced. The majority of New Zealand's population is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English. New Zealand is a developed country that ranks highly in international comparisons on human development, quality of life, life expectancy, literacy, public education, peace, prosperity, economic freedom, ease of doing business, lack of corruption, press freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable. Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the country's head of state and is represented by a ceremonial Governor-General who holds reserve powers. The Queen has no real political influence, and her position is essentially symbolic. Political power is held by the democratically elected Parliament of New Zealand under the leadership of the Prime Minister, who is the head of government. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What are some medically underprivileged communities in New Zealand? Q. I am a pre-med college student and I want to go to New Zealand to volunteer in a medical setting--hospitals, clinics, or something else. The program to which I am applying for funding is really interested in applicants who go to "underresourced" or "underpriviliged" communities. I've been thinking about some rural location in which there is a large Maori demographic with an understaffed medical clinic, or something like that. However, since I've never been to New Zealand, I don't know of any of these locations. Can you help? Asked by DSu - Fri Mar 13 13:35:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. We are planning to visit New Zealand and maybe Australia next year. Can anyone suggest a good escorted tour for us that is reasonable in price and about two weeks in length? Are the people in New Zealand friendly? Thanks for any help! Asked by Mayavi - Fri Jun 6 15:51:33 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. As I'm a New Zealander I have no idea what the best tours are as obviously us locals don't take them but a cheap bus company is the Kiwi Experience. I think they have guided tours. It's mostly full of backpackers & young people though, not sure how old you are. The best travel guide books are the Lonely Planet ones so check that out & also their website has a forum on it for asking other travellers advice on how they toured NZ (as in people who've just been here will answer you). Train in NZ is super slow, if you only have 2 weeks you might want to debate doing the Auckland to Wellington one as it takes about 12 hours!! Scenery is great for most of it but it is torture to be on a train for that long. Q. I would like to move to New Zealand in the next 5 years. I know the points system rewards you for a degree and training. I am just wondering if there is a quota for each country? Asked by John J - Sun Nov 11 13:29:07 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. I don't think they have a quota but they do prefer people with skills they are short of and who have already lined up a job. So as long as there are people they need more waiting, you won't go I'd go in a minute but people my age can't unless very very wealthy. I love NZ, like California was before it was spoiled by all the immigrants after World War II. Hope they can keep it that way.
