From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. London (pronounced /ˈlʌndən/) is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. It is the UK's largest and most populous metropolitan area and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. A major settlement for two millennia, its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium. London's core, the ancient City of London, the 'square mile' financial district, retains its mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis developed around it. Today, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly. London is a leading global city and one of the world's largest financial centres with the largest city GDP in Europe. Central London is home to the headquarters of most of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. London's influence in politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position. It is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. London hosted the 1908 and 1948 Summer Olympics and will host the 2012 Summer Olympics. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church. London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. In July 2007 it had an official population of 7,556,900 within the boundaries of Greater London, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union. The Greater London Urban Area (the second largest in the EU) has a population of 8,278,251. while the metropolitan area (the largest in the EU) has an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. The London Underground network, administered by Transport for London, is the oldest and most extensive underground railway network in the world, London Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers and the airspace is the busiest of any urban centre in the world. My friend and I are from the U.S. We are planning a trip to Europe this summer and have sorted out most of our travel and shelter arrangements, with one exception. We need to get from London to Amsterdam and we were considering traveling via ferry. We are unsure of A) How to go about booking the tickets. B) Should we do it in advance or wait until we get to London. Asked by Seth G - Tue Apr 22 15:38:25 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you know when you want to travel and what way you can buy the tickets, but if you will be using train or bus and ferry, there is little advantage to buy the tickets in advance and once you have booked for a certain day you can not (or not easily) change the date anymore. This is first time traveling overseas and when I arrive in London I want to know the process. Will I be questioned? Or can I just collect my luggage and go? How does it work? Asked by Itachi - Fri Jan 29 06:53:07 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends a lot where you're coming from as other EU countries have a different form of customs than from non-EU countries. If you're coming from an EU country (and are the holder of an EU passport) the likelihood of being stopped is small unless they have good reason to suspect you're smuggling items. Most of the time there's no more than one customs officer in an EU channel. If you're coming from a non-EU country they will check your passport and they may stop you, but if you're not carrying any banned items then you have nothing to fear. Q. How much does a train ticket from London to Scarborough cost? And how much for a ticket from London to Arundel, Sussex? Sorry if this is the wrong category. Super Off peak Return to Scarborough is 93.30, a Standard Off peak Return 151.10, an Anytime Return 239. These are 'turn up and go' prices for tomorrow. If you are travelling at a more future date, you maybe able to get cheaper tickets. Off peak day return to Arundel from Victoria is 22, an Anytime day return 23.20, and Off peak return (use any time within one month on off peak services), 27.80. You will be able to get more precise information by inputting your date and time of travel at Remeber, if you are travelling all the way from Arundel to Scarborough, you can… [cont.] Answered by rdenig_male - Tue Nov 10 17:24:31 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "london" Copper Heads for Weekly Advance in New York as Stockpiles Fall
