A town often becomes a ghost town because the economic activity that supported it has failed, or due to natural or human-caused disasters such as a flood, government action, uncontrolled lawlessness, or war. The term is sometimes used in a deprecated sense to include cities, towns, and neighborhoods which, while still populated, are significantly less so than in years past. Some ghost towns are tourist attractions, Barkerville, British Columbia; Tombstone, Arizona; Jerome, Arizona; Oatman, Arizona; Bannack, Montana; Kolmanskop; and Elizabeth Bay among them. This is especially true of those that preserve interesting architecture. Visiting, writing about, and photographing ghost towns is a minor industry. I visited Tombstone and Bisbee not too long ago in a trip across southern Arizona; no question -- Bisbee was better hands down. Tombstone was a real disappointment. It might be an interesting old town, but it was super commercialized. You can't even visit Boot Hill without passing through a gift shop. If you want to visit an old Arizona cemetery, pick a less touristy town such as Willcox. (Wyatt Earp's brother Warren is buried at the Pioneer Cemetery in Willcox. I was there on a quiet foggy morning -- a far different experience from the crowds in Tombstone, and a perfect atmosphere for old cemeteries.) Q. I've been planning a trip from May 13 to 20 and want to hear from people on the ground there what's its like. I live here in Mazatlan. It is a little quiet since alot of the tourists have been scared off, but the flu was nowhere near here. Restaurants and bars are scheduled to go back to normal tomorrow (cantinas were closed and bars/restaurants had an 11 pm mandatory closing time) I have heard schools will go back to session on the 15th. Come on down! There is plenty to do!
