NounWikipedia has an article on: ConsciousnessWikipedia consciousness (countable and uncountable; plural consciousnesses) Derived termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Consciousness is variously defined as subjective experience, or awareness, or wakefulness, or the executive control system of the mind. It is an umbrella term that may refer to a variety of mental phenomena. Although humans realize what everyday experiences are, consciousness refuses to be defined, philosophers note (e.g. John Searle in The Oxford Companion to Philosophy): "Anything that we are aware of at a given moment forms part of our consciousness, making conscious experience at once the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives." —Schneider and Velmans, 2007 Consciousness in medicine (e.g., anesthesiology) is assessed by observing a patient's alertness and responsiveness, and can be seen as a continuum of states ranging from alert, oriented to time and place, and communicative, through disorientation, then delirium, then loss of any meaningful communication, and ending with loss of movement in response to painful stimulation. Consciousness in psychology and philosophy has four characteristics: subjectivity, change, continuity and selectivity. Philosopher Franz Brentano has suggested intentionality or aboutness (that consciousness is about something). However, within the philosophy of mind there is no consensus on whether intentionality is a requirement for consciousness. Consciousness is the subject of much research in philosophy of mind, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Issues of practical concern include how the presence of consciousness can be assessed in severely ill or comatose people; whether non-human consciousness exists and if so how it can be measured; at what point in fetal development consciousness begins; and whether computers can achieve a conscious state. Can a machine with artificial intelligence be regarded as having some form of consciousness? What is consciousness? Asked by Aken - Thu Aug 16 01:00:43 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. In my view, consciousness reflects through inconsistency... inanimate objects without consciousness react consistently to any specific external stimulus or impact. We living beings (of course including animals and other forms) can not be always consistent in our reaction to any specific external stimulus or impact... our consciousness receives it in different ways at different times based on the state it is in at the respective points of time. How can an overdose lead to losing consciousness. And when yo ulose consciousness, are you near death or just passed out for a little while. (A). It depends on what drug it is, many are different as many of them are designed to make you lose consciousness as they are strengthened in order to cause that effect. (Q). And when someone is in a coma, is that near death or it's just a deep sleep. (A). A coma is, rather than a deep sleep, a state of consciousness that is very deep and very long lasting (usually). This will often lead to injury, disease or even death. (Q). What do EMT's do if they arrive on a scene where someone overdosed and they're unconscious ? (A). Once again this depends on the drug. Alcohol for instance usually… [cont.] Answered by Neilyo That Blind KEK - Thu Nov 12 08:54:35 2009 What is the field of psychology relating to consciousness?
Q. I am currently a psychology undergraduate student, and I have the most interest learning about consciousness (levels of consciousness, sleep, dreams, drugs, hypnosis, etc.). I was curious what branch of psychology this would be in. I want to go to graduate school and I would like to one day become a psychologist. Also, is a sociology minor good for this field? (because that's what I'm currently in) If not, what should I change it to? Please also let me know about the minor and/or other courses to take Asked by royalflushster - Tue Feb 12 02:09:17 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most previous replier got it with cognitive psychology, psychobiology (AKA biological psychology/AKA neuroscience. Sociology major? I personally think statistics minor would be more useful, since you'll impress the graduate admissions committe far better and you'll get useful background in order to perform and understand psychology research (that utilizes statistics). Is there a neuroscience minor? Or can you make up a minor, as some (usually private liberal arts) colleges allow you? To me, sociology is so easy and it proves nothing to the graduate admissions committee, unless you'd like to be a social psychologist. It's better in your case with a specific interest already in cognitive psych to try to mimick courses in this area by… [cont.] Answered by anonymous - Tue Feb 12 03:28:09 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "consciousness" Elian Gonzalez, 10 years on - The Guardian (blog)
