Odin (pronounced /ˈoʊdɨn/ from Old Norse Óðinn), is considered the chief god in Norse mythology and the ruler of Asgard. Homologous with the Anglo-Saxon Ƿōden and the Old High German Wotan, the name is descended from Proto-Germanic *Wōđinaz or *Wōđanaz. "Odin" is generally accepted as the modern English form of the name, although, in some cases, older forms may be used or preferred. His name is related to ōðr, meaning "fury, excitation," besides "mind," or "poetry." His role, like that of many of the Norse gods, is complex. He is considered a principal member of the Æsir (Norse Pantheon) and is associated with wisdom, war, battle, and death, and also magic, poetry, prophecy, victory, and the hunt.

Are Christians technically atheists for not believing in the Original Gods like Krishna and Odin?
Q. What is the definition of "atheist. Isn't everyone technically an atheist for not believing in some God or the other?
Asked by Arya Princess - Thu Jun 3 23:57:27 2010 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, if you want to get technical, atheism is the rejection that any deities exist. So no, but I see what you're getting at. This reminds me of a famous quotation from Stephen Roberts: "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

Q. In The Anime Mythical Detective Loki ragnarok. What is the crime that Loki Made? And why Odin Wants to kill him?

A. Well...I dunno if it's the same since it's been a while since I've seen Mythical Detective Loki, and I don't remember if they mentioned what the crime was. But, in actual mythology, he was instrumental in killing Odin's son Baldur, whom everyone loved. See, Baldur's mother got everything on earth to swear that they wouldn't hurt Baldur. But she forgot to ask the mistletoe. So everyone was celebrating and throwing things at Baldur, and watching them kind of bounce off without hurting him, and Loki pulled Baldur's blind brother Hod aside and gave him some mistletoe and told him to throw it at Baldur (Hod had no idea what Loki was asking him to throw). And Baldur died. That'd be why Odin hates him...Loki was responsible for his son's [cont.]

Did Odin regret sacrificing his eye for Wisdom?
Q. In Norse mythology, Odin sacrificed his eye at Mimir's spring for the Wisdom of Ages. Does anybody know enough about Norse mythology to know whether or not Odin regretted his decision afterwards?
Asked by Gruzzzy - Sun Feb 22 23:57:18 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Never. Odin gave his eye for wisdom, hung himself as a sacrifice from a tree for wisdom, and slept with a giantess to drink mead made from Kvasir's blood for wisdom. He was the all-father of the Gods and of humanity, and had to guide the good forces of the world to safety, to lead them in battle at Ragnarok, and, ultimately, to die in glorious battle for them. Such were the pressures and responsibilites laid upon him, that he needed to be as wise and intelligent as possible. In a religious context this would be translated as a reason for any of the capricious or mossible mean things Odin did - he did them for the greater good, and knew what to do because he was supremely wise. Another reason he might not regret is like what was said… [cont.]
